Why is this needed?

Here are 5 reasons:

1

Higher graduation rates

The financial obligation of college is the leading cause for high dropout rates. This is especially apparent from first-generation & low-income household students. According to the Education Data Initiative, "Students from households with incomes in the lowest quarter are 79.3% more likely to dropout than students from the highest quarter-income households ... First generation students have a 92.2% higher dropout rate than students whose parents had bachelor’s degrees or a higher level of education attainment."

2

Scholarship literacy for staff

Many financial aid offices may have thorough knowledge in the FAFSA and student loans, but not so much as it relates to how to win scholarships. This class can help bridge that gap as more students enroll in an institution for years to come.

3

Representation matters

In my presentation I make sure to show examples of winning students who have similar backgrounds to those primarily in attendance. When people see someone who looks like them or who is studying the same major as them — that can drastically encourage them more to start the scholarship process and not give into self-doubt and procrastination.

4

Peer-to-peer learning

As a fellow student myself, students may feel more connected to me teaching this topic as opposed to someone else. I also have the results they want instead of not speaking from personal experience. Scholarships may be overwhelming to understand, so my job is to make it easier and more approachable.

5

Higher engagement & retention

Speaking live (whether virtually or in-person) can dramatically increase engagement and retention in comparison to on-demand / asynchronous learning material. The class is also very interactive with polling questions.
